Dear Haddon Parents,

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 School Year.   My name is Deborah Plat, and I’m extremely happy to join the faculty and staff of Haddon STEAM Academy as the new Principal. I’m very passionate about education and I look forward to partnering with you to provide our students with a rigorous, engaging, and high-quality elementary school experience. Before joining Haddon, I served in a variety of teaching and educational leadership roles over the past 20 years with LAUSD. Some of the roles I have held include classroom teacher, ELD/Title One Coordinator, Bridge Coordinator, APEIS, and for the last seven years, Principal of Wilbur Charter for Enriched Academics, an affiliated charter school under the umbrella of LAUSD, in Local District Northwest. I have two daughters, both proud graduates of LAUSD, and my husband is a former elementary teacher (at San Jose ES), and now teaches adults at West Valley Adult Education Center. We are an LAUSD family!

One of the most important aspects of my work here at Haddon STEAM Academy will be building strong relationships with students, teachers and families.  You’ll find me in the hallways, classrooms and on the playground getting to know your child(ren).  My passion has been and always will be educating students.  With that in mind, you can expect that I will work diligently with teachers to make sure our students are exposed to curriculum and instruction that is both engaging and challenging.   I have an open door policy and welcome your input and ideas.  I’m looking forward to meeting each of you as we start this new and exciting year together!

Last year was another great year for Haddon STEAM Academy.   Our Common Core test scores for 3rd to 5th continue to rise, student and teacher attendance increased, and student enrollment has increased for the third straight year.   We are accepting STEAM Academy permits for Kinder to 5th grade.  Please share this information with family and friends.  Stop by the main office for more information or call (818) 899-0244.

Rainbow Pack, our non-profit partner is back this year with FREE BACKBACKS and school supplies on the first day of school, August 15.   Students who bring their own backpacks will be given the additional school supplies, but not a backpack.

Last May, Haddon STEAM Academy was approved by the LAUSD school board to become a STEAM Magnet school for the 2018-2019 school year. This will be a Project Based Learning Academy serving grades 1-5. We are so excited to bring this opportunity to our students, the shining stars of Pacoima! Please see Mrs. Valdemar for more information on this exciting opportunity. Hard work, a vision and a plan are driving the changes occurring at Haddon.

We are also honored to continue our second year to participate in ELLP: Early Language and Literacy Plan that will modify how and when we provide early language literacy prevention and intervention.   ELLP will help Haddon ensure that our students are reading by third grade and reading to learn in the subsequent grades (read more here).  This year, as part of our LIS Academy Autonomies, we will be supplementing our math program with Eureka math.  This math program comes highly rated and will help our academy shape the math minds of our children through a rigorous program.

Although you may be aware of some of the personnel changes at Haddon, I would like thank the following for their contributions to the students and families at Haddon:

  • Mr. Richard Ramos, has accepted the position of Principal of Northridge Middle School. We thank him for all that he has done for Haddon over the past three years
  • We are also losing long time teacher Mr. Solon Castillo; he will be the new coordinator at Brentwood Elementary Science Magnet.
  • Ms. Regina Baucum will also be leaving Haddon; she has accepted a position at Reseda High School.
  • Plant Manager, David Archible, has accepted a promotion at the secondary level.
  • Building and Grounds Worker, Jose Cruz, has accepted a full time gardener position.
  • Both Mr. Archible and Mr. Cruz’s last day will be Friday, August 11, 2017.
  • Alejandra Febles, APEIS, is returning to the classroom as a Resource Specialist.

Congratulations to everyone on their new positions and good luck.

We have new employees too: Plant Manager, Jonathan Mendez, who will be starting at Haddon on August 23rd, a new special education teacher, Emily Ayala, and Maria Diez, APEIS. Please welcome them to our Haddon Family.

Classes begin on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at 7:45 am. Please send students grades 1-5 to the pavilion where your child's teacher will be waiting to meet the class. Each teacher will have a sign with the room number for easy identification.

ETK, TK, and Kinder students and their parents will attend kinder meet and greet in the auditorium at 9:00 AM. Teachers will be introduced to parents and students, and important information will be shared about Haddon’s Kinder Program.

For the safety and security of our students, your children, we are continuing our “CLOSED CAMPUS” policy. Please help us reduce congestion and maintain safety by promptly saying goodbye to your child at the valet drop off and send them into the campus.  Remember to always obey the traffic laws; you are an example for your child and our community.

Also in an effort to reduce our impact on the environment, many resources have been posted on our website (http://achieve.lausd.net/haddon).   Please take a moment to review the Parent Handbook, school calendar, and important information.

Lastly, please send your child or children in the school dress code colors–white, navy blue or sky blue Polo shirt, and blue pants.

We appreciate your commitment to helping make #haddonprideofpacoima.

Sincerely,

Deborah Plat, Principal

Mariachi Leones de Pacoima Top Performers

Thirteen pint sized Haddon students made the journey to National City for the 5th Annual Mariachi Festival on March 10-12, 2017.   The festival included Haddon students participating in mariachi classes with famous mariachi instructors like Javier Rodriguez formally of Mariachi Los Camperos.   The Pride of Pacoima was the only group representing Los Angeles County, and the only elementary level group to compete against middle and high schoolers.   The festival culminated in the judges selecting “4 Top Performers” from a list of nine competitors.   Mariachi Los Leones beat out 7 high school groups and won the honor of performing to the enormous crowd of mariachi connoisseurs as one of the “4 Top Performers”.     The crowd went wild, yelling out “una mas, una mas,” and the festival’s producers announcing to the crowd that Mariachi Los Leones would be back for more in 2018.   The students recently performed to a standing ovation crowd on December 3rd, 2016 at the Valley Performing Arts Center and have been invited back to perform at VPAC in December 2017.

STEAM Takes Flight in Second Grade

Ms. Hernandez' STEAM project explored the science of man-made flight with Paper Airplanes.  Students learned about the Wright Brothers and their discovery of flight.   And also discussed how drag, gravity, thrust and lift impact the distance the airplane travels. The students designed and flew their own paper airplane and analyzed their flight data and type of materials to determine the best design for getting their plane to travel the farthest distance. After test flights, they compared the distance their airplane flew to the distances flown by other classmates.  The winner amazed us all with a distance of 36 feet!

Haddon Students Study Environmental Studies through STEAM

Students from Ms. Hernandez study oil spills and their impact on planet Earth. Students read and discussed oil spills that occurred in the past, like the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989.  Students had the opportunity to work in groups and investigate the effects of an “oil spill” in water.  In a simulated “ocean” (a pan of water), a small amount of oil was dropped into the water to observe the effects and interaction with rocks, ocean life (toys), and plant life found in the tin pan.  A discussion on preventing and cleaning up oil contamination led the students to use a variety of materials to see what method works best for recovering the most oil from the water.

Ms. Hernandez said, "We discussed the impact on the environment, new ship designs by engineers, and clean-up methods.  I was impressed with the students’ compassion for the environment after our experiment. There was communication, collaboration, an abundance of critical thinking, and creativity. Another enlightening moment for me."

Kinder STEAM

Kinder students discussed air and described what it felt and looked like.  Their ideas included air as wind, hairdryer and  fans. Students came to the conclusion that air moves things.  Kinder teachers demonstrated how to make a rocket using paper. Students were given a variety of paper to choose from and materials.   Students designed their own rocket which included shape, color and use of paper.  All kinder classes tested rockets outside.   Students blew into the straw to create air pressure, which caused the rockets to blow off the straw.   Ms. Mena, Kinder Co-Grade Level Chair said, "students  compared whose flew further, or didn't, and whether the type of paper used affected the results, and what happened if you blew more or less air."
